Can the data be restored to another tenant in Entra ID?

Currently it is possible to restore data from backup to another Entra ID tenant for the following directory objects:

  • Users
  • Groups
  • Enterprise applications
  • App registrations
  • Admin units
  • Policies

1. Configure target tenant

First you need to add the target tenant where you want to restore the data to. You can do this on the Settings page by selecting Target tenants and clicking the + icon ('Add tenant').

Select Sign in with Microsoft 365 and fill in / select the target tenant's Global Admin account. Once added, you can see the tenant on the page and it can be used as a restore destination.

2. Select the target tenant and domain in the restore wizard

To start restoration to the target tenant, take the following steps:

  • Go to the directory object page (e.g. Users or Groups) and select the item(s) you want to restore.
  • Proceed to the window with the restore options and click To another tenant ('1' in the screenshot below). You can see the existing target tenant(s) in the drop-down menu - in case of having multiple target tenants added, select the one you want to restore the data to.
  • The available domain names for the selected tenant can now be seen under the With domain menu ('2' in the screenshot below) and you can select the domain from there. E.g. if you are restoring users and select 'nexeticbackup.onmicrosoft.com' as the domain, the users are restored with the email ...@nexeticbackup.onmicrosoft.com.

3. Start the restore

Select the snapshot date and the rest of the restore options (e.g. 'With memberships' and/or 'With role assignments') and start the restoration process by clicking the Restore button. Selected items will be restored to the target tenant.
