Is backup license required to back up Shared Mailboxes?

In Office 365, a shared mailbox can be created as a submail to an existing account. But in the backup service shared mailboxes are considered as domain users. They are available on Users page in the Shield Backup Office 365 Management Portal among other domain users. A backup license needs to be assigned to them to perform backups.
