It depends on your current Exchange Online configuration. Customers using Nexetic's EWS-based Online Archive or Public Folder backups should verify that their tenant is configured to allow continued EWS access during Microsoft's transition period. If the required settings are already in place, no changes may be necessary.
Continuing existing EWS backups
Microsoft begins phased Exchange Web Services (EWS) disablement in Exchange Online on October 1, 2026, with permanent shutdown starting April 1, 2027.
Customers continuing to use Nexetic's EWS-based Online Archive and Public Folder backups should ensure that their Exchange Online tenant has EWSEnabled=True and that Nexetic's application (client) ID is included in EWSAllowedAppIDs. Keep the ID allowed for as long as these backups depend on EWS. The allow list cannot extend EWS access beyond the final shutdown.
These are Exchange Online access settings. Continuing the existing EWS backups does not require new Graph permissions or renewed Graph admin consent. The existing EWS permissions remain necessary.
Whether any action is required depends on the current configuration of the tenant.
Microsoft may populate a missing allow list from the preceding 60 days of application usage during the rollout. This can miss infrequently used applications, so customers should review the list themselves and add any applications that still require EWS access. EWSAllowedAppIDs is distinct from the older user-agent-based EWSAllowList setting.
Online Archive migration to Microsoft Graph
Microsoft currently targets Q4 2026 for general access to existing Online Archive (In-Place Archive) mailbox contents through Microsoft Graph, together with full-fidelity archive import/export support. These are roadmap targets and not confirmed availability dates.
Once Online Archive support becomes available through Graph, Nexetic will adopt it for archive backups. We will inform customers of any required reconfiguration, including additional application permissions and administrator consent. The final permission requirements for this migration have not yet been confirmed.
This future migration is separate from the Exchange Online settings required to continue existing EWS-based backups during Microsoft's transition period.
Public Folders and exported snapshots
Microsoft has confirmed that general Public Folder create/read/update/delete APIs will not be implemented in Microsoft Graph. Public Folder import/export is a separate capability currently targeted for Q4 2026 and does not provide a direct replacement for general Public Folder access.
Once export functionality becomes available, customers can save exported snapshots to a OneDrive location protected by Nexetic Backup. Existing OneDrive backups will then protect those exported files.
Customers must repeat the export process to capture subsequent changes. This approach does not provide continuous backup of live Public Folders.
