In the Backup portal, enter the Teams chats page.
Recover Channel posts
Select the Team and Channel in the left-side navigation. You can filter by Teams and Channels by typing the names in the search box.
You can see channel messages for the selected channel.
You can use the Search functionality to find channel messages from the selected Team and Channel. You can search by Content or Sender, or you can also select time frame to view channel messages from that certain time period (From -> To).
Download Channel messages
All active admin accounts can view channel messages/posts from all teams and channels. Admins can recover the channel messages via Download or Restore.
To download the selected channel posts to your workstation, click Download and select the file format: Txt, Csv or Excel. A list of channel posts are downloaded in the selected format. If you have filtered the messages by using the Search options, the list of messages filtered by the search will be downloaded.
Restore Channel messages
To restore the selected channel post to Microsoft 365, click Restore. It is not possible to restore channel posts to their original location, but you can restore them to a new Team. Type the new team name in Restore options window, in the field New team name. If you have filtered the messages by using the Search options, the filtered date range is visible in the From - To date selector, but you can still change the date range, if needed.
Click Restore to start the restoration process. During the restore process the new Team will be created and the selected channel messages will be restored to that team.
Recover Private Chat messages
To access the messages sent via Private chats, you must first select a user - it can be anyone who is part of the chat discussion. Select the user from the top-left drop-down menu. Under Private chats menu you will see all the chat discussion topics that the selected person is part of. Click the chat discussion you want to recover.

If you are not part of the private chat discussion, you can not read the chat messages in the Backup portal. This is the case if you see text Restricted under the Posts. But if you are an Admin (GA, SharePoint or Exchange Admin), you can either download users' chat messages, or restore them back to Microsoft 365.

Search/filtering does not work in Restricted mode. You can not use the search if the contents of the chats are not visible to you.
